Come To My (i)Pod #3

Wow, its been a minute. Well here’s what I’ve been rocking
lately:

Albums:
“Lonely Avenue” by Ben Folds and Nick Hornsby
“Danger Days: The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys” by My
Chemical Romance
“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” by Kanye West
“One Love” by David Guetta

Comics:
The Flash
All Things Return Of Bruce Wayne

TV:
The Walking Dead

First off, I’m so in love with the Walking Dead. What an amazing show. The first season just ended at only six episodes, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I got misty eyed in at least 4 of the episodes. The finale was spectacular, and I cannot wait for the second season next year. I will certainly be running the blu rays non-stop when they come out in march. I’m
so in love with this series, and there’s 2 reasons why that’s saying something, even though I’m a huge geek: 1. I’m not the biggest Zombie guy. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good zombie flick from time to time (I heart SHAUN OF THE DEAD) but that’s certainly not a draw for me. 2. I have only read one issue of the comic. I have heard nothing but amazing things from people who read the book, but I haven’t made the jump. Now I’m more hesitant than I
was before because I don’t want to watch the series comparing it to the book. I’m so in love with all the characters, and I want to keep my perceptions of them intact. Also, from what I’ve read in interviews, the series deviated from the book in a lot of big ways, and I just don’t want to be constantly judging it against the book. All that being said, OMG, if you havent seen it at all, what are you doing, go watch this amazing, amazing show. Damn walkers!

Comics wise, BRUCE WAYNE IS BACK BITCHES!!!! 🙂 I missed the big guy, and he’ back in rare form. I loved “The Return Of Bruce Wayne” and the tie ins. Grant Morrison is tops on my list right now and I love where he’s taking the Dark Knight. We’ll see how long it lasts. I get the feeling that Bat purists are gonna have issues with his choices more and more as we go, so we’ll see how much crap he takes. For now, he’s got a least one ardent supporter! On the bright(est day) side of DC, Geoff Johns and Francis Manapul’s run on The Flash has been awesome. The last 2 issues have been real head turners, and in typical Johns fashion, you get the feeling that seeds are being sewn for something major for the DCU in the future. It’s a great read for anyone who’s just starting out with the Flash, but its hardcore enough for
longtime fans.

Music wise, you can’t go wrong with the above records. My Chem is at their rockiest, and Ben Folds is melodic as ever with some lyrical help from Nick Hornsby. The surprising entry to some is “One Love” by David Guetta. That album is pure pop party perfection. You’ve certainly heard the hits from it, but there’s not a bad track on it. Kanye West takes a lot of shit
in the press because he has a big mouth, but if you can look past that, you will find that he his miles and miles ahead of everyone in the game as a rapper AND producer. MBDTF is an insanely wonderful album, and should be a contender for album of the year.

Come To My (i)Pod #2

Hey anyone who reads this! Here’s what I’ve been rocking this week:

Albums:
“Maximum Balloon” by Maximum Balloon
“Terrible Things” by Terrible Things
“Invented” by Jimmy Eat World
“Hands All Over” by Maroon 5
“See You On The Other Side” by Mercury Rev
“Dark Is The Way, Light Is The Place” by Anberlin

Movies:
Superman/Batman: Apocalypse

Comics:
Batman: Streets Of Gotham
Green Arrow

As you can see, its been a slow week for comics and flicks. BSOG is a carry over from next week and you will probably see it for a bit as I’m catching up on it. With all the titles I read I let that one fall by the wayside for some crazy reason. I heart Paul Dini in a big way, so I can’t believe I let that fall by the wayside for so long, but its been great so far. I’m also a big fan of the Manhunter Co-Features. Its been a great series so far and I can’t wait to see how it fits in with the return of Bruce Wayne (so soon!). In keeping with the DC Comics trend, The only movie I watched this week was SUPERMAN/BATMAN: APOCALYPSE, the new release in DC’s line of direct to DVD movies. The film is based on the second arc of Jeph Loeb’s run of Superman/Batman (with art by Michael Turner) collected in the trades as “Supergirl”. This arc reintroduced the character of  Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, to the DCU. I was a big fan of the comic, so I was amped when I heard that it would be coming to the small screen. After viewing, it did not disappoint. I would rank it among my other favorite DC Animated movies, SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES and JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS.

Musically, its been a pop/rock kind of week. “Maximum Balloon” is a great record, the side project of TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek. I love TVOTR, and this disc is certainly going to keep their fans happy. Funky enough to groove on, artsy enough to satisfy even the most scowling hipster, Sitek’s first solo effort is a must grab for any TVOTR fan. It is closest to the bands last release “Dear Science” genre wise, but the comparisons stop there. This is a strong solo effort that will stand on its own. In the same funky vein, I’ve been enjoying Maroon 5’s new album “Hands All Over”. Adam Levine and co. have produced another solid pop effort, weaving seamlessly between ballad and sexy funk. If you liked their last album, though not a direct copy, it’s very similar in nature. Worth the listen.

My heavy rock moods this week were satisfied by “Terrible Things” and “Dark Is The Way, Light Is The Place”. Anberin gets back to their riff heavy roots this time around. Personally, I was not as in love with their album “New Surrender”. It seemed uneven to me, the band trying to find a balance between their hard rocking roots and a softer sound. A perfectly fine album, but it didn’t hit me as hard as their previous efforts. DITWLITP finds the band on even footing, harnessing the balance they had sought previously. If you’re not a fan or felt as I did about “New Surrender”, check out tracks ‘We Owe This To Ourselves’ and ‘Down’. You should also check out Terrible Things. A “supergroup” of sorts featuring Andy Jackson (Hot Rod circuit), Fred Mascherino (Breaking Pangaea, Taking back Sunday), and Josh Eppard (Coheed and Cambria), the trio has put together a stellar debut. Crunchy riffs, powerful choruses, and a thundering rhythm section make for a record full of dips and turns. Rock at its most pure.

Everyone should love Jimmy Eat World. They’ll rock you, make you think, and always please your ears. Of course that’s just my opinion, but I love these guys. “Invented” is a welcome addition to their catalogue, equal parts rock (“My Best Theory”, “Evidence”) and contemplative pop (“Coffee and cigarettes”, “Heart Is Hard To Find”). Also see the highs and lows of the title track, a trademark strength of the band’s.

Finally this week I’ve been really enjoying much of the catalogue of Mercury Rev, but “See You On The Other Side” has really struck me. Perhaps because it is the newest addition to my collection, but also because it’s a fascinating record. Mercury Rev have always existed between the light and the dark, the hard and soft, with each disc a new and more exciting journey than the last. Orchestral swells, heavy guitars, playful wind instruments, and great storytelling make this album a must listen. My only regret is that it took me so long to get into this band.

Well that’s it for me! Have you heard any of these records?

Up, Up, And Away

I’ve been stuck on jury duty for the past 2 days. So far its been a laugh riot, but the real revelation has been my rediscovering of “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman” via the netflix app for my iPhone. My sister and I used to watch this show faithfully during it’s original run in the 90’s. I was really young then, and my memory of the series was scant at best. I decided to give it another shot, and I’m really glad I did. The show didn’t reinvent TV and it’s very evident that their special effects budget wasn’t more powerful than a locomotive, but it’s been a fun ride through the first few episodes. The performances by Teri Hatcher (Lois Lane) and Dean Cain (Clark Kent/Superman) really ring true with the DC mythos. Also of note are Lane Smith as the indomitable Perry White, and John Shea as the not so bald Lex Luthor.

As beloved as all heroes are, it has often been said that they would be nothing without the dark yang to their sterling yin. For example, imagine Batman without the Joker or the Riddler. While the character would still be viable, many of the stories that cemented Bruce Wayne’s status in our hearts would not be possible. This is certainly true of the relationship between Superman, his unfaltering good nature lending itself to classification as a “boy scout”, and Luthor, a personification of the evil that humans are capable of. While other villains have tragic back stories and powers beyond comprehension, Luthor boats only a “genius level” intellect” and a firm belief in the American dream. He is a self made man, and has worked his way into a position of power in Metropolis. Massive structures throughout the city bear his namesake, a towering testament to his wealth and might. When Superman soars in and upstages him, Luthor’s jealousy manifests itself in a fanatical devotion to the The Man Of Steel’s annihilation. Outwardly, his hate is justified by the threat Superman poses to his ideals. Luthor states that mankind can achieve great things with the appropriate amount of drive, and they do not need any other worldly help in doing so. Superman’s presence breeds complacency, he believes. With him on earth, why would a mere man wish to achieve at all? An interesting viewpoint, but it is not Luthor’s sole motivation for Superman’s destruction. His worries about mankind’s reaction to Superman are derived from his own feelings of jealousy. No matter how great his body of work, his actions never granted him
Messiah status in Metropolis. At it’s core, Luthor’s megalomaniacal tendencies are a result of envy. He can never be as powerful as Superman, so he must destroy him. He makes a conscious choice to follow those emotions down a dark path, and for that, he has become one of the most hated and revered villains in comic book history, but he is also the single most relatable. Everyone who has ever picked up a Superman comic, hummed John Williams iconic film score, or referred to something that vexes them as “my kryptonite” shares Luthor’s envy of Superman. We all want to caress the skyline at tremendous speeds, stand up for what is right, and punish what is wrong. Superman will not waver when it comes to his morals. He does not kill,
torture, or frighten for our admiration, he merely exists the only way he knows how. His great power was bestowed upon him, he did not choose it. Had he lent himself to evil, forces of good would not stand a chance. He could enslave a planet without breaking a sweat, but instead he uses his power to protect those who cannot protect themselves. His life is one long struggle, but it is a struggle his brings upon himself. It is that unflappable sense of justice that we envy most of all. At our darkest, the red and yellow “S” with a solid blue background is a constant reminder that even the mightiest of us struggles on a daily basis. Our battles take place on the ground, we are vulnerable to cuts and bruises of all kinds, and we may not be able to see what’s behind the door in front of us, but it is our hope for the triumph of good that we have in common with The Man Of Tomorrow. Hope keeps us divergent from the path Lex Luthor has chosen. That same hope was sparked in my heart the first time I saw Christopher Reeve pull aside his dress shirt and tie, and it was strengthened by Dean Cain scooping up leads and Teri Hatcher on a weekly basis during my childhood. Though that series ended it’s run over a decade ago, my belief in good triumphing over evil no matter the odds is something no Lex Luthor can ever take away from me. However insurmountable an obstacle may seem, I believe I can overcome it, even if it takes more than a single bound.

My Best Theory

So I’m stuck on jury duty today, but it turns out not o be a total loss. It gives me a chance to listen to the new releases by two of my favorite artists! “Lonely Avenue” by Ben Folds with Nick Hornby doing the lyrics, as well as “Invented” by Jimmy Eat World! Also, thank god for the netflix app for the iPhone. Gonna try to catch up on some flicks! Woo-rah!

Come to my (i)Pod #1

Anyone get the reference? Gold Star if you do. I’m going to try to make this a weekly feature. When you see that title, the post is going to be a list of the things that I’m really into this week. It may be only albums, it may be everything I saw this week, but its going to be a snapshot of whats playing on my iPod/TV/brain. Without further ado, here we go:

Albums
“Hurley” by Weezer
“Pinkerton” by Weezer
“A Thousand Suns” by Linkin Park
“Business Casual” by Chromeo
“Brother’s Blood” by Kevin Devine

Movies:
The Town
Let The Right One In

Comics:
Batman: Streets Of Gotham
Batman and Robin
Green Lantern Emerald Warriors
Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern
Brightest Day
Justice League: Generation Lost

Favorites: of all the albums I’ve been rocking this week, the one I’ve been surprised by is “A Thousand Suns”. I’m an old school Weezer fan (title hint) and I love Hurley, but “A Thousand Suns” takes the cake. Back in my younger, less mellow years I was a vocal detractor of Linkin Park. Why might you ask? Great question. By all rights I should have loved them, and in fact did like some of their songs when i would hear them on the radio, but would tell myself I didn’t. Again, why? No idea. Fact of the matter is, this album is awesome from start to finish. It is a concept piece, designed to flow together as one. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. Recommended for headphone use, and make sure you can listen to it without gaps between the tracks. It makes a huge difference.

As far as movies go, I LOVED The Town and Let The Right One In. I’m a Ben Affleck fan, and he shot a right hook to the haters with this movie. He stars, screenwrites, and directs this flick, and he delivers on all fronts. Could be my fave flick of the year so far. Let The Right One In was wonderful as well. I’m a big sci-fi/fantasy fan and I love action and suspense as much as the next guy, but this was a fantasy film that didn’t really need that much action. It is more about the relationship between two 12 year olds that really need each other. The english language remake Let Me In is coming out soon, and even though it looks like they played up the gore more than the original, I’m still amped to see their take on it.

For comics, as you can probably tell, I’m primarily a DC fan. GL is my jamb, and these series just cannot disappoint. I’ve listened to a bunch of comics podcasts and read a lot about people’s views on Grant Morrison’s run of Batman. Reviews seem to be mixed, but I for one am a HUGE fan. I don’t think he is a God who can do no wrong, but I really feel he’s mining the essence of what it is to be Batman, why there will always be a Batman, and why we will always love Batman. You should really go all the way back to the start and read everything involved with his epic, as a lot of the books can’t be fully appreciated out of context. If this seems like too daunting of a task (it’s a whole lot), start with his run of Batman and Robin. Quality from beginning to current, when all of the setup starts to pay off. Also in GenLost, LOVE the Kingdom Come tie-in. Max Lord is a BAMF.

Well that’s about it! What are you excited about?

Why I’m clogging The Blog-o-sphere With My Inane Ramblings

Well hello there. I started this blog in hopes that this wildly unpopular format will finally catch on!

Yeah no that’s not why. As I stated in my about me thing that I’m not even sure is posted, I’m a guy who loves Music, Movies, Comic Books, and most of all, my lady. I have a lot of insane things going on in my life right now, all of which I’m sure will be revealed in due time. I am very passionate about the aforementioned things, as they are what keeps me sane (hence the title of the blog, I’m sure that suspense was killing you).

That out-of-the-way, I just want to get one thing straight about this blog. This is not going to be a large bitch session, about anything. back when MySpace was the rage (remember that grandpa? when that was all you had to keep your kids from using?) I used the blog portion as one large pity party, and I’m over that. So you should be largely safe from my weepy monologue. Also, this is not going to be hate blog either. A lot of internetites/people in the “legitimate” press think that hating a particular band, movie, comic book, book, human being, etc makes them cool. They start blogs or write articles spewing bile about these artists to seem witty, or important. “I’m better than Good Charlotte (that’s right grandpa, one of your pop singers! Lets grab the Victrola and jitterbug the night away to one of their dittys!) cause they suck!” they might say. The publishing of this next statement may be death on the interweb, so if i never write again know that ad covered ninja’s descended from my ceiling and eviscerated me but not before asking me if I wanted to check my credit score or a bigger penis (tough choice). Here it is universe: I don’t think I’m better than, or hate anyone. I don’t have enough room in my life to carry that kind of negativity towards people, and THAT is why i started this blog. I’ve long been sick of reading reviews of movies, only to find that I COMEPLETELY disagree with the “Top Critics”. A lot of my favorite artists albums get routinely destroyed by the press, but I don’t care. It is my opinion that anyone’s opinion should not inform your own. If you hated something, good for you, that’s your right. However, your opinion is no more valid than mine, or anyone else. The internet is a breeding ground for anynonomus hate, and im sick of it. When I talk about something on this blog, you will get an honest, fair opinion of it, and you can just about count on a positive opinion. If i saw a movie with a terrible script, horrible acting, but superb directing, that’s what I’ll write about. If I bought an album (yes bought! remember back when that as your only option for hearing new albums? The freedom to pay for music is what our children fought the Kaiser for gramps, and gosh darn it, I won’t let their sacrifices be in vain!) and the lyrics are sophomoric, but the melodies are catchy as all hell, I’ll let you know how I felt.

If this all sounds like something you want to be a part of, by all means, enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it, thanks for stopping by!
